How do I know when it's time to come in for a checkup?

Every patient needs to have a checkup at least every six months because, remember, there is much more to a thorough dental checkup than a teeth cleaning. Expertly trained dental professionals conduct a gum disease check; a head, neck, face and intra oral cancer screening; and even analyze any potential warning areas for bone loss, bleeding, cavities, fractures or breaks, and missing fillings! Keeping your appointments for regular checkups proves to be an invaluable opportunity for you to take advantage of this in-depth analysis for your health while having a chance to communicate directly with us about your goals for a healthy, great-looking smile.

Our patients receive individualized treatment plans based on the conditions within their mouth and how often they may need professional attention. As a patient, you can trust Parkey & Davis team members to clarify exactly what to expect at each appointment and to remind you as your appointments approach. If you're not currently a patient of Parkey & Davis, just come see us and we'll set up your plan, send you reminders before each appointment and keep things as simple and comfortable as you'd hope!

My gums bleed after I brush. Is this something to be concerned about?

Absolutely. Healthy gums don't bleed. Call right away for a gum disease evaluation.

Bleeding gums

Healthy gums are pink and firm and do not bleed easily. Occasionally gum bleeding occurs if you brush your teeth and gums too hard with a hard-bristled toothbrush or snap dental floss hard against your gums. Using a soft-bristled tooth brush and flossing carefully can prevent the problem.
Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) causes red, swollen gums that bleed easily when brushed. Because gingivitis usually doesn't cause pain, many people delay treatment. If not treated, gum disease can cause more serious problems with the gum tissue.

As gum disease progresses, the gums pull away from the teeth, leaving deep pockets where plaque can hide and cause further damage. This stage of gum disease is called periodontitis or periodontal disease and is caused by an infection of the gums, bone, and other tissues that surround and support the teeth. Periodontitis can progress until it causes damage to the bones that support the teeth. In this late stage, teeth may become loose and fall out or need to be removed. It is important to treat gum disease early because it gets harder to treat as it becomes more severe.

The newest reseach is also telling us that bleeding gums can also have an effect on your overall health.  It has been linked to heart disease, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and preterm low-birthweight babies.

Do I have to floss every day?

Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Decay–causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.

I want my front teeth to look better, but I do not want to wear braces. What would you recommend?

Make an appointment to discuss the many options available to you at Parkey & Davis. For example, we may discuss Invisalign with you. Invisalign straightens your teeth through a series of clear plastic removable aligners. We may find porcelain veneers are a better fit for your needs. Veneers are a thin layer of porcelain attached to the front surface of your teeth for a natural-looking, beautiful result achieved in a short amount of time. Again, there are several other options that may best address your desire for better looking front teeth, so visiting with us to help us determine what would be best for your goals is definitely your best action plan from here. We look forward to hearing from you.
